In Okay for Now, main character Doug Swieteck moves to a small town where he's the strange new person who doesn't know anything. He meets Lil Spicer, and with her help, he discovers different sides to him that he didn't know existed. Through this journey, Doug makes many questionable choices, but strives to overcome his faults and finally find self acceptance. This novel is a very powerful story of self discovery with a strong, original voice from the protagonist. Gary D. Schmidt portrays the complexity of emotions phenomenally, which engages the reader into Doug's story. The changes he goes through really touches the reader as you go on this journey with him. I recommend Okay for Now for anyone who enjoys coming of age novels and likes heartwarming endings.
